Tom Schmitt, President and CEO, FedEx Global Supply Chain Services, FedEx Services, is a firm believer in ‘practical innovation’ – leveraging all of a company’s capabilities for competitive advantage. He built FedEx Solutions from scratch. CEO Fred Smith now calls it the company’s secret weapon.
In this interview, you will find out:
Tom’s personal management system
Why he believes scorecards are essential for modern business (and what makes a ‘good’ metric)
How to optimize innovation for bottom line results
What do you think is the best part of this video and why?
A bright talk. Mixing surgical and strategic thinking with creative and flexible devices should be the new language of the 21st century and even for development management. It may indeed be a good reason why learning and environmental studies must be necessary for successful projects in vulnerable communities not just time-bound classical projects.
"Great companies come out of tough times" is my personal mantra, so also great people like Tom shine when things are tough and have to push forward in spite of their circumstances. Secondly combining creativity with analysis and offering practical solutions to exceed customer expectation is a great way forward. What are next steps in the supply chain business? What models today will be gone tomorrow?
surely incredible leader !!
I liked FedEx without knowing this interview. Now, I feel more comfortable with that company. It is the result of a good strategy!
This video is very useful for me. ..."always change what is possilbe" is the sentence that i like the best.
I liked how he reinforced the idea of hiring people better than oneself in a specific dimension. He related it to right-brain/left-brain skills, but I think it also applies to having people with a completely different perspective on problems. While you want to avoid the "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail," syndrome, bringing people together with a different bias or perspective can be very productive, especially if they have the time to listen to each other.
great video.
People always ask me what makes a good innovator? or how can one drive innovation? Tom Schmitt has just provided the perfect answer to these questions... "always change what is possible"
